This theory comes from US & Art background, but it could be applicable elsewhere as well. In US , if you can find 1000 people who are your true fans, and willing to spend $100 for your art / creation every year, you could make $100,000 which is good enought to have a decent living.
In this wast world of 7 Billion people, there shoud be a thousand people who believes in the niche you are in, and if you can find them and produce something they feel valuable, you could do anything.
In short you don't need millions of followers or anything to do what you love to do and suistain.
